Theodoros 172 was a bishop and vicedominus of the antipope Constantine (Konstantinos 140); on hearing of the death of Toto 1, Theodoros 172 fled for safety with Konstantinos 140 and Passibos 1 to the chapel of St Caesarius in the vestiarium of the Church of St Venantius; there they were discovered a few hours later by the authorities in Rome ("huius Romanae urbis militiae iudices"), removed and held in custody: Lib. Pont. 96. 9 ("Theodoro episcopo et vicedomino suo"). Shortly after the election as pope of Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84), Theodoros 172 was seized, his eyes were put out and his tongue was cut out; he was refused treatment or food or water and was taken by them to the monastery of Clivus Scauri, where he died of thirst: Lib. Pont. 96. 12 ("Theodorum episcopum et vicedominum"). The date of these events was summer 768.
