Ioannes 8 was eparchos of the Polis (τὸν τῆς πόλεως ὕπαρχον: Nic. Brev. de Boor 45, Mango 45:39; Ἰωάννην τὸν ἔπαρχον: Theoph. AM 6203); in 711 he was sent to Cherson by the emperor Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1), together with Georgios 3 and Christophoros 2, to restore Toudounos 1 and Zoilos 1 and to bring back Elias 1 and Bardanes (Philippikos 1), after the people there had approached the Khazars for help: Nic. Brev. de Boor 45, Mango 45, Theoph. AM 6203. In Cherson he and Georgios 3 were admitted to the city and there trapped and killed: Nic. Brev. de Boor 46, Mango 45 (ἅμα τῷ ἐπάρχῳ), Theoph. AM 6203.
