Zosimas 1 was a monk and an iconoclast, he was chosen by the emperor Leo V (Leo 15) to help promote the cause of iconoclasm (ἐκ δὲ τοῦ μοναχικοῦ καταλόγου Λεόντιόν τινα καὶ Ζωσιμᾶν); later he died after suffering mutilation (his nose was cut off) for sexual misconduct: Vita Nicetae Medicii 31.
