A native of Syria (μονάζοντα Σύρον, ὀνόματι Στέφανον), Stephanos 9 was a monk and was on friendly terms with the caliph Hisham 1, who gave permission to the Christians of the East to appoint him, if they so wished (εἴπερ θέλοιεν), to the patriarchate of Antioch, which had been kept vacant by the Arabs for forty years; he was appointed (in 742/743) and occupied the see for two years; after his death successors continued to be appointed down to Theophanes 18's own day; he is described by Theophanes 18 as a devout man but lacking cultural polish (ἀγροικότερον μέν, εὐλαβῆ): Theoph. AM 6234. He died in 744 and was succeeded in the patriarchate by Theophylaktos 5: Theoph. AM 6236.
