Meletios 3 was a Stoudite monk, addressee of two letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite):Theod. Stud., Epp. 218, p. 340; 327, pp. 468-469 (addressed Μελετίῳ τέκνῳ. He is mentioned in two other letters of Theodoros 15: Theod. Stud., Epp. 41, pp. 121-122; 138, pp. 254-255. The letters all date between 809 and 818. For a short while during the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) Meletios 3 abandoned the iconophile cause: Theod. Stud., Ep. 138, p. 255, line 10. He lived in exile in the anatolikon theme with Ioannes 462 for a time during the persecution: Theod. Stud., Ep. 218. In one of the sermons of Theodoros 15 he is referred to as a priest (πρεσβύτερος): Theod. Stud., Catech. Magna 61 (p. 431 Papadopoulos-Kerameus).
