Ioannes 462 was a monk, probably a Stoudite, he was the addressee of two letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), written between 815 and 818: Theod. Stud., Ep. 138 (addressed Ἰωάννῃ μοναχῷ ἀνατολικῷ), Ep. 219 (addressed Ἰωάννῃ τέκνῳ). He is mentioned in another letter of Theodoros 15: Theod. Stud., Ep. 218. During the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) he lived in the Anatolikoi theme with his fellow-monk, Meletios 3: Theod. Stud., Ep. 218. He is addressed as τέκνον καὶ ἀδελφέ and ὦ καλὲ παῖ, and Theodoros 15 describes himself as the πατὲρ καὶ ἀδελφός of Ioannes 462: Theod. Stud., Ep. 219.
