Liutpert 1 was the son of the Lombard king Cunincpert 1; he was still a child ("filio adhuc puerilis aetatis") when his father died (in 700) but was left the throne, under the guardianship of Ansprand 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 17. After eight months his reign was threatened by Raginpert 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 18. Then after the death of Raginpert 1, Raginpert 1' s son Aripert 1 defeated Liutpert 1 and his supporters (Ansprand 1, Ato 1, Tatzo 1, Rotharit 1 and Farao 1), capturing the young Liutpert 1 ("Liutpertum infantulum") alive: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 19. Shortly afterwards he was put to death on Aripert 1's orders: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 20.
