Leo 280 was a native of Sicily; he was a spatharios; in 811 he accompanied an embassy sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) to the emperor Nikephoros I (Nikephoros 8); ten years earlier he had fled from Sicily to Rome to join the Frankish emperor and now wished to return home: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 811.
