In 843 or 844 Leo 109 was one of those sent by the empress Theodora 2 to convert or exterminate the Paulicians; the violence of their persecution drove the Paulicians to revolt (see Karbeas 1 for the date and the circumstances): Theoph. Cont. IV 16 (p. 165) (ὁ τοῦ Ἀργυροῦ), Scyl., p. 92 (ὁ τοῦ Ἀργυροῦ δὲ ἢν Λέων). His colleagues were Andronikos 3 and Soudales 1.
