Khalid 2 was the son of Abd ar-Rahman 9, grandson of Khalid b. al-Walid (the "Sword of Allah") (Khalid 1): Tabari XVIII, pp. 89, 93. He killed his father's murderer, Ibn Uthal, at Homs, and was then punished by Mu`awiya 1 with imprisonment and a fine, so that no one retaliated against him: Tabari XVIII, p. 89 (in AH 46, AD 666/667). In AH 48 (Feb. 668-Feb. 669) he was apparently in overall charge of a naval operation against the Byzantines, with forces from Egypt and Medina under Uqbah 1 and al-Mundhir 1: Tabari XVIII, p. 93.
