Karoulomannos 2 was the son of Pippin (Pepin 1) and brother of Carulus (Charlemagne; Karoulos 1). In 754 he and his brother were anointed kings of the Franks, together with their father, by pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) at the monastery of St Denis at Paris: Lib. Pont. 94. 27 ("Pippinus rex ... cum duobus filiis suis reges uncti sunt Francorum"). By 768 they both had the title king of the Franks and patricius of the Romans, like their father ("excellentissimos viros Pipinum, Carulum et Carulomannum, reges Francorum et patricios Romanorum"): Lib. Pont. 96. 16. King of the Franks and patricius of the Romans; on the death of Pepin 1 in 768, he and his brother Karoulos 1 succeeded him and became joint rulers of the Franks ("eius filios antedictos Carulum et Carulomannum, germanos fratres, reges Francorum et patricios Romanorum"); they received a papal envoy, Sergios 53, sent to Pepin 1 before his death was known at Rome, and sent twelve learned bishops to Rome to attend the Council called by pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84) to deliberate on the affair of the antipope Constantine (Konstantinos 140): Lib. Pont. 96. 16-17. Karoulos 1 and his brother received requests from Stephanos 84 for help to make Desiderius (Desiderios 3) fulfil his promises to restore the rights ("iustitiae") of the Roman Church: Lib. Pont. 96. 28. He died in late 771. Afterwards his widow and children fled for refuge to the court of the Lombard king, Desiderios 3, together with Autchar 1: Lib. Pont. 97. 9.
