Helene 1 was a granddaughter of St Philaretos (Philaretos 1), eldest daughter of Ioannes 12 and Eirene 2, sister of Bardas 1, Eustathios 1, Niketas 8, Philaretos 3, Euphemia 1 and Hypatia 3: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 141, lines 28-29 (θυγατέρες αὐτῆσ: Ἑλένη καὶ Εὐφημία καὶ Ὑπατία). Helene 1 and her sister Euphemia 1 became nuns in the convent of the Theotokos at the Gate of Pemptos and both of them died after twelve years there: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 159, line 11. The family was of Armenian descent; see Maria 2.
