Gracilis 1 was a tribunus; a supporter of the antipope Constantine (Konstantinos 140), he was accused of doing great harm in Campania; troops from Rome went to Alatri in Campania early in the pontificate of Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84) (i.e. 768/769) and arrested him; he was taken back to Rome and remained in custody until some people from Campania removed him, under the pretext of taking him to a monastery, and near the Colosseum put out his eyes and cut out his tongue: Lib. Pont. 96. 14 ("Gracilis tribunus, consentaneus iamdicti Constantini apostolice sedis invasoris, per quem plura mala Campanie partes perpetrata sunt").
