Epiphanios 46 was a monk at the monastery of Baleou, living in a cell above the monastery in a place called Kochlias; he was an enemy of Ioannikios 2 (it is not explained why) and he fulfilled a prophecy made many years before, when Ioannikios 2 had newly adopted the ascetic life, by making an attack on him in his old age; Ioannikios 2 was then in his ninety-second year; Epiphanios 46 and others (including the monk Makarios 8) tried to burn him out; the others abandoned the attack and withdrew but Epiphanios 46 remained implacable: Sabas, Vita Ioannicii 51 (Ἐπιφάνιος γάρ τις ὀνομαζόμενος μοναχὸς ὑπεράνω τῆς μονῆς Βαλεοῦ, ἐν τόπῳ προσαγορευομένῳ Κοχλία καθεζόμενος ἐν κελλίῳ). Ioannikios 2 subsequently sought refuge inside the monastery of Antidios; the date must have been c. 844/845; see Ioannikios 2.
