Drogo 1 was archbishop of Metz; in 844, when the emperor Lothar (Lotharios 1) heard of the election of Sergius II (Sergios 60) as bishop of Rome he sent Drogo, his own son Louis (Lodoïchos 1), an army and a number of other archbishops and bishops, abbots and comites to Rome; on their route through Italy, from Bolonia (Bononia, Bologna) onwards they plundered and robbed as they went; at a place called Fons Capellae (unidentified), several of Drogo 1's leading advisers were struck by lightning and killed ("quidam de primatibus Drogonis consiliariis"): Lib. Pont. 104. 8 ("Drogonem, videlicet Metensis aecclesiae archiepiscopum"). They reached Rome and the pope greeted Louis on 8 June (in 844): Lib. Pont. 104. 10. In Rome in 844 Drogo 1 held a council, attended by the bishops and archbishops who had come with him (all from Italy, judging by the names of their sees); they had complaints to make against pope Sergios 60 and also against bishops and nobles in Rome, but after the hearings Sergios 60 emerged victorious: Lib. Pont. 104. 14 ("ipse Drogo, archiepiscopus Metensis ecclesiae"). See further Bernard 2, Fratellus 1, Georgios 138, Ioannes 249, Racipert 2, Vuldo 1 and Wifrid 1.
