Lodoïchos 1 was the Frankish emperor Louis II, who reigned from 854 to 875. Husband of Engiberga (Engelberga 1); king of Francia (τὸν ρῆγα Φραγγίας); he and his wife received gifts from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), with a request to expel from his see pope Nikolaos 28, excommunicated at Constantinople, with a promise of acclamation by the imperial title at Constantinople if they did so (βασιλεῖς τούτους ἀνευφημεῖν ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει ἐπηγγέλλετο); the message was sent via the envoys Zacharias 18 and Theodoros 175 in autumn 867 (shortly before the death of Michael III (Michael 11), on 23 September): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 537B-C, 541C. The message did not arrive; cf. Zacharias 18. Lodoïchos 1 was the son of the emperor Lothar I (Lotharios 1): Lib. Pont. 104. 8 (mentioned in 844). In 844 his father sent him to Rome where he was crowned king of the Lombards by pope Sergius II (Sergios 60): Lib. Pont. 104. 8-17, cf. 13 ("tunc almificus pontifex manibus suis ipsum Hludovicum, imperatoris filium, oleo sancto perunguens, regali et pretiosissima coronavit corona, regemque Langobardorum perfecit. Cui regalem tribuens gladium illique subcingere iussit"). His capital was at Pavia ("Papiam ... ubi ab exordio principatus sui culmen regebat"): Lib. Pont. 104. 18. The Council of Rome on 8 December 853 is dated to his fifth year: Lib. Pont. 105. 90 (did he become joint emperor in 848? Lothar (Lotharios 1) and Louis (Lodoïchos 1) are styled imperatores). Lodoïchos 1 visited Rome in early 855 and with pope Leo IV (Leo 121) heard the case between Daniel 8 and Gratianos 2: Lib. Pont. 105. 110-113. The decree from Rome recording the election of Benediktos 7 as bishop of Rome (in 855) was sent to him; he accepted the election of Benedict (Benediktos 7): Lib. Pont. 106. 6-7 (his envoys, Adalbert 2 and Bernard 3, were persuaded to change their support from Benediktos 7 to Anastasios 25). Styled Caesar: Lib. Pont. 107. 5, 7, 23 ("Lodowicus caesar"). Styled Augustus: Lib. Pont. 107. 7-9, 24, 43 ("Hlodowicus Augustus"). He had just left Rome when the death occurred of Benediktos 7 (in 758); he returned promptly and attended the consecration of Nikolaos 28, with whom he dined on the third day: Lib. Pont. 107. 7. They again dined together at St Leucius' (the fifth milestone from Rome) when Louis (Lodoïchos 1) set out for home; they made a public display of their respect for one another, before the pope returned to Rome and Louis (Lodoïchos 1) resumed his homeward journey: Lib. Pont. 107. 7-10. He sent envoys to escort the archbishop of Ravenna, Ioannes 315, from Pavia to Rome to appear before Nikolaos 28, but later, when Ioannes 315 again requested his aid, he told Ioannes 315 to submit to Nikolaos 28, though he did again send envoys: Lib. Pont. 107. 23-28. He presented gifts to St Peter's: Lib. Pont. 107. 43. Grandfather of Louis III (who is not included in PBE I): Const. Porph., DAI 26, 17ff.
