Choireas 1 and Gazarenos 1 were attendants and loyal followers of Thomas the Slav (Thomas 7); when the latter was overthrown, Choireas 1 was in command at a place called Kaballa (near Iconium); like Gazarenos 1 he refused to submit to the emperor Michael II (Michael 10), despite offers of the high dignity of magistros, and survived by pillaging and plundering; eventually Michael 10 persuaded elements in the fortress to close the gates on Choireas 1 while he was out raiding; when he found re-entry impossible, Choireas 1 joined forces with Gazarenos 1 and they headed for Syria, but their own troops turned on them and executed them both: Theoph. Cont. II 20 (pp. 71-73).
A supporter of Thomas 7; Choireas 1 and Zagorenos (Gazarenos 1) refused to surrender the fortresses they held after Thomas 7's defeat but were captured by the emperor Michael II (Michael 10) and executed: Zon. XV 23. 33.
