Bryennios 4 was a strategos; Bryenas (Bryennios 4) was the addressee of a letter written by Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) between 821 and 826; he was the brother of Ioannes 464 (τὸν ὁμαίμονα τῆς ὑψηλότητός σου); they were of noble family; their mother (Anonyma 81) had just died and been buried in the absence of both her sons; Theodoros 15 wrote a letter of consolation and encouragement to Bryenas; he is praised for his knowledge, wisdom and intelligence, excelling many in authority (ὑπὲρ πολλοὺς τῶν νῦν ὁρωμένων ἐν τέλει); Bryennios 4 is styled τὴν σὴν καλοκἀγαθίαν and σου ἡ εὐγένεια, and addressed as ὦ ἐπιπόθητε and ὦ φίλτατε: Theod. Stud., Ep. 509 (addressed as Βρυένᾳ στρατηγῷ).
