Azzo 1 was possibly head of the monastery of St Vincent near the Volturnum; in 752 he was sent with Optatos 2 by the pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) to the Lombard king Aistulf 1 to persuade him to drop his demand for the subjection of Rome; their mission was a failure: Lib. Pont. 94. 6-7.
