Anthimos 17 was a spatharios; he was an envoy with Synesios 2 sent in 765 to the Franks by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) to discuss a marriage between Konstantinos 7's son Leo 4 and the daughter of Pepin 1, Gisela 1; they also discussed the issue of the veneration of icons; while Synesios 2 remained in Francia, Anthimos 17 returned to Constantinople with a Frankish embassy: MGH, Epp. III 1, 545ff.
