Abas 1 was an arab army commander; in 708 he and Maslama 1 attacked Tyana; they laid siege to it during the winter and after defeating a Roman army sent against them eventually captured it: Theoph. AM 6201. According to Nicephorus, the general who accompanied Maslama on this occasion was called Sulayman; cf. Sulayman 4. In the following year Abas 1 attacked the Roman empire (τὴν Ῥωμανίαν) and returned with many prisoners; he then began to build the fort of Garis near Heliopolis: Theoph. AM 6202. In 713 he again invaded the empire; he captured Antioch in Pisidia and took a large number of prisoners before returning home: Theoph. AM 6205, Mich. Syr. II 479 (identified as the son of Walid 1). Possibly identical with Abas 2, the son of Walid 1.
