Theophano 2 was the younger daughter (παῖδες) of Michael 7 (the emperor Michael I) and Prokopia 1 (πάντων δὲ ὑστάτη Θεοφανώ), perhaps the youngest of their five children; sister of Georgo 1; she also had three brothers, Theophylaktos 9, Staurakios 12 and Ignatios 1 (Niketas); she and her sister lived and died as nuns (αἳ καὶ παρθενικῶς τὸν ὅλον βίον καὶ μοναχικῶς διαβιώσασαι μακαρίως ἐκοιμήθησαν): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 492A. The children of Michael 7 were exiled with their mother (Prokopia 1) after Michael 7 abdicated: Scyl., p. 9. Either Theophano 2 or her sister Georgo 1 gave assistance to victims of the persecution of iconophiles during the reign of Theophilos 5: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 500A (Ἰγνάτιον ... καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν).
