Tiberios 10, who was also called Petasius, had himself proclaimed emperor in Tuscia late in the pontificate of Gregory II (Gregorios 72); he was proclaimed at Manturia and seems to have been recognised at Blera, Luna and Manturia; the exarchos Eutychius (Eutychios 4) and pope Gregory sent forces against him and he was quickly overthrown and executed; his head was sent to the emperor at Constantinople: Lib. Pont. 91. 23 (later recension only) ("venit in partibus Tusciae, in castrum Manturianense, quidam seductor, Tiberius nomine, cui cognomen erat Petasius, qui sibi regnum Romani imperii usurpare conabatur, leviores quosque decipiens, ita ut Manturianenses, Lunenses atque Blerani ei sacramenta praestitissent"). The date was certainly after 727, when the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) first issued his orders against images, and before the death of pope Gregory II (Gregorios 72) in 731. From 727 Italy was in disorder and the authority of the emperor in Constantinople was widely rejected because of the iconoclast policy of Leo III; serious consideration seems to have been given to appointing a new emperor in Italy until pope Gregory opposed the idea (see Lib. Pont. 91. 17), but perhaps the proclamation of Tiberius was one symptom of the discontent. Manturia (Monterano) and Blera (Bieda) were both in Tuscia a little way north of Rome, on the Via Clodia; Luna is presumably in the same area and not to be identified with the Luna (Luni) north of Pisa; it may be identifiable with the ancient Forum Clodii, also on the Via Clodia and situated between Manturia and Blera.
