Thomas 31 was a basilikos strator and droungarios of the Theologos; owner of two seals dateable to the second half of the ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 2561A (dateable to the second half of the ninth century; obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει, with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners; rev.: +Θωμα β' - στρατορ' [(καὶ)] - δρουγγαρ' [τ] - [Θ]εολογ'; the beta on the reverse is in the form of a Roman capital R, indicating a date not before the early to mid ninth century; the name and titles read: Θωμᾷ βασιλικῷ στράτορι καὶ δρουγγαρίῳ τοῦ Θεολόγου), Konstantopoulos, JIAN 5, 135 (dateable to the eighth or ninth century; the text reads: ... [στ]ράτορι καὶ [δ]ρουγαρίῳ τ[οῦ Θ]εολόγου). The term "Theologos" refers to Ephesos, a fortified defensive centre around the Church of Hagios Ioannes Theologos; cf.
