Theophilos 56, having first acquired a grounding in grammar, was sent by the bishop of Gangra, Konstantinos 294, to Ignatius the Deacon (Ignatios 9, then himself a bishop) for further education (τέως ταῖς γραμματικαῖς ἐμπειρίαις στοιχειωθείς, ἐπὶ τὰ τελεώτερα ἑαυτόν, θεοῦ συνεπαμύνοντος, ἐπιδίδωσιν): Ignatius Diac., Ep. 18. He presumably was sent from Gangra in Paphlagonia to Nikaia in Bithynia, where Ignatios 9 was bishop.
