Theophilos 23 was nicknamed Lydiates, like the Melissenoi family, to whom he was apparently related by marriage (Θεόφιλος δὲ ὁ κατὰ τοὺς Μελισσηνοὺς Λυδιάτης καλούμενος - γαμβρὸς γὰρ αὐτῶν ὁ ἄνηρ ἐχρημάτισε, καὶ τὸ ἐκ γένους ἐκείνοις παρωνύμως ἐπιτεθέν, εἰκότως καὶ οὗτος καταχρηστίκως ἐπεφέρετο); he bore the title of protospatharios (καὶ γὰρ καὶ τῷ τοῦ πρωτοσπαθαρίου ἐτετίμητο ἀξιώματι); Theophilos 23 and his wife (Melissene 1) lost several children in infancy, until they took a baby daughter (Anonyma 40) to Nicolas the Stoudite (Nikolaos 26) to be blessed: Vita Nic. Stud. 916D-917B.
