Theophanes 51 was a monk; he was the addressee of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), probably written between 821 and 826 (cf. Fatouros, p. 467*, n. 917); he was encouraged by Theodoros 15 to oppose the activities of an unnamed chartoularios (Anonymus 619) who was promoting the cause of iconoclasm in Sicily; he is styled τῇ τιμιότητί σου and addressed as ὦ τριπόθητε: Theod. Stud., Ep. 524 (addressed Θεοφάνῃ μονάζοντι). He was evidently in Sicily.
