Theophanes 49 was archbishop of Ephesos; owner of a seal dateable to the second half of the ninth century (so Zacos and Veglery; Laurent dated it to the eleventh): Zacos and Veglery 2987 = Laurent, Corpus V 1, no. 258. The name and title read: Θεοφάνει ἀρχιεπισκόπῳ Ἐφεσοῦ.
