Theophanes 38 was possibly a monk; owner of a seal dateable to the first half of the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 2501. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: Θεοφα - νω δουλο - Χρηστου, with crosses between tendrils above and below. The text reads: Θεοτόκε, βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Θεοφάνῃ δούλῳ Χριστοῦ. The last phrase perhaps indicates that Theophanes 38 was a monk.
