Theophanes 15 was a basilikos protospatharios and domestikos of the Optimatoi; owner of a seal dateable to the first half of the ninth century (see below): Ebersolt, "Sceaux byzantins", pp. 236-237, no. 373. Obv.: cruciform monogram in the name of the Virgin. Rev.: Θεοφάνης βασιλικὸς πρωτοσπαθάριος and δομέστικος τῶν Ὀπτιμάτων. Ebersolt dated the seal to the iconoclast period (VIII/IX), but Seibt (see Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 99) narrowed this down to the first half of the ninth century.
