A hermit, Theoktistos 19 was the addressee of two letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud., Ep. 485 (a. 824), Ep. 490 (a. 824/825) (both addressed Θεοκτίστῳ ἐρημίτῃ). Before 824 he had already spent several years as a hermit; Theoktistos 19 apparently lived somewhere between Smyrna and Constantinople, probably on Mt Olympus in Bithynia; he was known for his asceticism; he was involved in a dispute which was causing division among the monks; this division already existed three years earlier, when Theodoros 15 travelled from Smyrna to the region; Theodoros 15 had written a letter about it to Theoktistos 19 (not extant) but Theoktistos 19 had not replied: Theod. Stud., Ep. 485. Theoktistos 19 now wrote to Theodoros 15 giving a statement of the faith, which Theodoros 15 found satisfactory: Theod. Stud., Ep. 490. In a letter to Ioannikios 2 (St Ioannikios) Theodoros 15 wrote about Theoktistos 19 (περὶ Θεοκτίστου τοῦ ἐρημίτου); he had allegedly deserted the Church, but Theodoros 15 wrote to him trying to bring him back, and had now heard through Nikanor 1 that he had repented and returned: Theod. Stud., Ep. 461. Theoktistos 19 is styled ἡ τιμιότης σου: Theod. Stud., Ep. 485, 490. He is addressed as ἀδελφὲ πνευματικέ: Theod. Stud., Ep. 485. Cf. also Theoktistos 2.
