In 792 Theognostos 1 was one of two strategoi who were killed in the battle of Markellai on 20 July when the army of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) was heavily defeated by the Bulgars (the other was Niketas 10): Theoph. AM 6284 (Νικήταν τε καὶ Θεόγνωστον στρατηγοὺς γεγονότας).
