Theodotos 1 was one of the closest disciples (συνέκδημοι) of the Paulician leader Sergios 1; when fighting broke out after Sergios's death between the supporters of Sergios and those of Baanes 1, it was Theodotos 1 who brought it to an end by persuading both parties that no difference of faith existed between them: Peter of Sicily, 174, 182-183.
