Stephanos 87 was notarius regionarius and sacellarius; envoy (missus), with Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51), sent by pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) (in April 772) to the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3) to obtain the restoration of the rights ("iustitiae") claimed by the see of Rome and to make a permanent friendship agreement; they were still en route from Rome and only at Perusia when news came that Desiderios 3 had seized further cities belonging to St Peter: Lib. Pont. 97. 6 ("suos missos pro his omnibus perficiendis, scilicet Stephanum notarium regionarium et sacellarium atque Paulum cubicularium et tunc superistam"), cf. 97. 7 (the date was only two months after Hadrianos 1 became pope, in early Feb. 772). Hadrianos 1 sent a further letter to Desiderios 3 demanding the return of the cities while his envoys, "Stephanus sacellarius et Paulus superista", were still en route to the king: Lib. Pont. 97. 8.
