Stephanos 80 was a deacon of Constantinople (Στεφάνου διακόνου τῆς ἐκκλησίας Κωνσταντινουπόλεως); Stephanos 80 was author of the Life of St Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2) (BHG 1666). It was his first work of the kind and he wrote it forty-two years after the death of Stephanos 2: Vita Steph. Iun. 89, 19-21 (1072C). Stephen the Younger died probably in 764, 765 or 767 and so the date of the work was c. 806/809. Stephanos 80's sources were oral, consisting of the stories told to him by disciples of Stephanos 2 and others who had known him: Vita Steph. Iun. 89, 21-90, 4 (1072C-D). He was encouraged to write the work by Epiphanios 25, successor of Stephanos 2 as head of the Auxentius communities: Vita Steph. Iun. 175, 26-176, 4 (1184B-C).
