Sophronios 4 became patriarch of Alexandria in the fourth year of the caliph al-Mutasim 1, and remained in office for thirteen years: Eutychius Alex. 1134D. He was the author of a letter to the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) defending the veneration of icons, which is said to have persuaded the emperor to change his mind: Eutychius Alex. 1137BC. Patriarch of Alexandria; in AH 233 (= 847/848) he was succeeded as patriarch by Michael 56: Eutychius Alex. 1137D. Michael in fact became patriarch in 860.
