Philomates 1 was a hypatos and protonotarios of the Opsikion; owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals III 39.45a = Zacos and Veglery 1727 (where the name is restored as "Apelates"). Obv.: cruciform monogram of uncertain type, with .ω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: +Φιλ - ματ' υπα. - και α' νοτ' του - Οψικ. The name and titles read: Φιλομμάτῃ ὑπάτῳ καὶ πρωτονοταρίῳ τοῦ Ὀψικίου. The same individual was probably owner of another seal on which are recorded the same titles: DOSeals III 39.45b = Zacos and Veglery 2324b (where the name is read as "Philomelos"). Obv.: cruciform monogram of uncertain type. Rev.: +Φιλο. - ματ' υπατ - και α' νοτ' του - Οψηκ'.
