Petros 74, also known as "the Wretched" (ὁ Δείλαιος), was the bishop of Sardis: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 512C (Πέτρος ὁ Σαρδέων ὁ λεγόμενος Δείλαιος), 544B-C (Πέτρος ὁ τῶν Σαρδέων; Πέτρος μὲν ὁ καλούμενος Δείλαιος). He was one of the opponents of the patriarch Ignatios 1 between 847 and 858, associating himself with Gregorios Asbestas (Gregorios 26) and Eulampios of Apamea (Eulampios 1): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 512C. A supporter of Photios 1, he was one of the envoys sent to the bishop of Rome by Basilios 7 and Ignatios 1 after the return of Ignatios 1 to the patriarchal see in 867; his fellow-envoys were Ioannes of Perge (Ioannes 241) and Basilios 59; en route he perished in a shipwreck in the gulf of Dalmatia, but his fellow-envoys arrived safely in Rome: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 544B-C (Πέτρος μὲν ὁ καλούμενος Δείλαιος, ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ Δαλματίας κινδύνῳ περιπεσὼν, δείλαιος ὤλετο). Possibly identical with the owner of the seal, Zacos II 869; see Petros 75.
