Pegasios 1 was a Stoudite monk; he broke his oaths, left the monastery and abandoned the monastic dress, to follow a secular career; he obtained an imperial appointment (βασιλικῷ ἀξιώματι) and pursued an active military career, fighting in battles, before himself being killed in battle: Theod. Stud., Catech. Parva 101 (p. 347 Auvray).
