Ὁ Πέχ; it is not clear if this is a name or a title; possibly in c. 833 Pech 1 and the khagan of Khazaria (Anonymus 197) sent envoys to the emperor Theophilos 5 asking for the stronghold of Sarkel on the Don to be fortified; Theophilos 5 sent Petronas 7 to carry out the task: Theoph. Cont. III 28 (p. 122), cf. Const. Porph., DAI 42, 27ff. (ὁ γὰρ χαγάνος ἐκεῖνος καὶ ὁ πὲχ Χαζαρίας). He was perhaps one of the leaders of the Khazars. See Dunlop, Jewish Khazars.
