Pankratios 1 was described as a false prophet and an astronomer -- that is an astrologer -- (Παγκράτιον τὸν ψευδοπροφήτην καὶ ἀστρονόμον), he foretold that the Romans under Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) would be victorious against the Bulgars in the battle of Markellai (20 July 792); the Romans were defeated with very heavy losses and Pankratios 1 himself was among those killed in the battle: Theoph. AM 6284. He was apparently an astrologer at Konstantinos 8's court.
