Mares 1 was a Stoudite monk; joint addressee with Pinouphios 1 of a letter from Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15) written not before 799; he and Pinouphios 1 had defected and were invited by Theodoros 15 to return; they had previously sent two letters to Theodoros 15: Theod. Stud., Ep. 20, pp. 53-54.
