In 733 Manes 1 was strategos of the Kibyrrhaiotai (Μάνην, τὸν στρατηγὸν τῶν Κιβυραιωτῶν) when the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) sent him at the head of a large fleet to Italy to put down opposition to the emperor's iconoclast policies; the fleet was wrecked in the Adriatic: Theoph. AM 6224.
