Leo 253 was a friend (φίλῳ: p. 218, line 1) of Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15), living in Constantinople, to whom Theodoros 15 wrote a letter of thanks between 815 and 818 for the friendship and support shown by him to other monks who were suffering in the persecution (under Leo V (Leo 15)); he is addressed as ὦ φίλε καλέ (p. 218, line 2): Theod. Stud., Ep. 98, p. 218 (addressed Λέοντι φίλῳ).
