Leo 13's family name was Serantapechos (Λέων πατρίκιος ὁ Σεραντάπηχος): Theoph. AM 6295. He was therefore apparently a relative of Konstantinos 15 and Theophylaktos 8 and also of the empress Eirene 1, and presumably a native of Hellas; cf. Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, p. 193. A patrikios (πατρίκιος), he was one of those who supported the overthrow of the empress Eirene 1 on 31 October 802, by Nikephoros 8: Theoph. AM 6295.
