Karellos 1 was a kandidatos; owner of a seal dateable to the sixth or seventh century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 459, no. 4 (facsimile). Obv.: +Ca - rell - u. Rev.: +ca - ndida - tu. The letters are Latin but the language is Greek. Cf. PLRE III, p. 272, Carellus 2, for a similar seal in Dumbarton Oaks (Zacos and Veglery 767, dated sixth century), probably owned by the same man.
