Kampaganos 1 was a leader of the Bulgars (ἄλλος δέ τις ἄρχων αὐτῶν); he was killed by his own slaves at Varna after the defeat of the Bulgars under Toktos 1 by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7): Nic. Brev. de Boor 71, Mango 79:8. For the date, 772/773, see Grumel, Chronologie, p. 388. Probably identical with Paganos 1 (cf. Runciman, First Bulgarian Empire, p. 39).
