Ioannes 442 was the son of the patrikios Leo 258 and Anna 9, with whom he founded the female monastery of Ignai: Theod. Stud., Epigrammata 120 (cf. lines 7-8 αὐτῆς γε ταύτης καὶ Λέοντος συζύγου, μεθ' ὧν Ἰωάννου τε, φιλτάτου τέκνου). He had brothers and/or sisters with whom, like their parents, he followed the monastic life: Theod. Stud., Epigrammata 115.4-5 (καὶ τὸν μονήρους ἀσπάσασθαι σὺν τέκνοις βίον φαεινὸν οὐρανοκτήτου κλέους. See Speck, Jamben, pp. 310ff.
