Ioannes 221 was son of Danelis 1; he lived in Patras in the Peloponnesos with his widowed mother, who was extremely wealthy; she persuaded Basilios 7 (the future emperor Basil I) to become the spiritual brother of her son: Theoph. Cont. V 11 (pp. 227-228).
