Ioannes 96 was a native of Cyprus; he was a bishop but in his later years he lived with Peter of Atroa (Petros 34) in the monastery on Mt Olympus (St Zacharias) in submission to him (καί τινα ἐπίσκοπον, Κύπριον τῷ γένει, Ἰωάννην καλούμενον, ὃς καὶ ταπεινοφρονῶν τῷ ὁσίῳ πατρὶ ὑπετάττετο πρὸς πᾶσαν διακονίαν): Vita Petr. Atr. 51, p. 169. In his ninetieth year, while dining with Petros 34, he lost a tooth; Peter 34 replaced it and it was still firm when Ioannes 96 died eleven years later (therefore he died aged 101): Vita Petr. Atr. 56, p. 177.
